To help give you all the information you need to know about Mastaplasta’s unique range of leather and suede repair products, we have put together a list of common questions and answered them as best we can. If you are having trouble finding the best suede or leather repair option for you then just drop us an email and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

What are MastaPlasta’s leather repair patches made from?

Our leather and suede repair patches are made from a specially-developed vegan material called MastaHide and have a leather or suede finish – both are suitable to repair leather, suede, vinyl and many other fabrics used in upholstery. It is a super strong and supple, breathable luxury leather/suede alternative. MastaPlasta is proud to have the Peta seal of approval and is happy to say no animal products are used and no animals harmed in the making of our products. Tag Battoo patches are also made from our MastaHide vegan leather.

Can I cut the patch?

If you would like to cut the any of our patches to make it a more custom fit, then yes with a sharp pair of scissors it is possible. Our XL patches do not have a pressed edge so are best for people looking to cut to a custom size or shape. The pressed edge on our other patches makes for a neater finish. We advise that you cut the patch before removing the backing paper.

How do I apply the product?

Simple! All you do is peel off the backing paper, then press down the patch over the damaged area.

You can use the item straightaway but the bond will strengthen over the first 24 hours.

Make sure the patch is big enough to cover the hole and still have some good smooth surface beneath for it to bond to.

Also check the area is dust-free and dry underneath. Do not to clean the area beforehand with chemicals as this can affect the bonding.

When applying on an area subject to a lot of friction, make sure the edges are positioned where they are least likely to be subject to constant rubbing.

Commons sense: Always follow the contours of the fabric you are covering – otherwise the patch simply does not fit and it will be pushed or pulled into the gaps beneath when the item is in use. Watch out for this over bumpy seams and where cushions separate – don’t try to bridge these gaps; follow the flow of the fabric.

Can I remove the patch once its on?

It is very important to remember that once the product has been applied it may become extremely difficult to remove. MastaPlasta Ltd cannot accept responsibility for any damage that may be caused to any substrate surface that the patch has been applied to or its subsequent removal by physical or chemical means. If you do stick it down wrongly, then quickly peeling it off again and re-sticking it should be fine. Do it straightaway though, and try to get it right second time as this action will diminish the sticking quality of the glue. If you do this on some leathers like aniline leather which contain a lot of oil and no protective finish, then the patch may leave a mark but this can normally be gently rubbed away with a suede brush. If the patch is placed on bonded leather where the surface is peeling away, then the patch may of course take this fractured, weak surface with it when you take it off.

What if I try and remove the patch and do more damage?

MastaPlasta Ltd cannot accept responsibility for any damage that may be caused to any substrate surface that the patch is applied to or its subsequent removal by physical or chemical means. Please bear in mind that our patches tend to be applied to weak and damaged surfaces and may be the only thing holding the surface together.

How much do your patches cost?

The prices for each patch are shown on the main shop page here underneath each image, and also on the individual product pages underneath the name of the product. Since we launched our patches in 2009, we have never put our prices up but have used our improved production techniques and really good housekeeping to bust all the inflationary pressures.

How do I clean it?

Your repair patch can be easily wiped clean with a damp cloth and any other solution that is suitable to use on leather surfaces. With our Tag Battoo patches, the inks and gilding applied make them unsuitable for areas subject to a lot of handling and just like a tattoo, the colours will fade naturally over time. If you have to clean them, then please just use a cloth dampened with a little water.

Will my leather patch be the same colour as the one on the website?

Everyone’s screen settings are different, so colours may not be exactly the same as how they appear on your screen. We urge people not to get to concerned about exact colour matching.

One of the missions behind MastaPlastas is that there is nothing wrong or ugly about a patch – especially when a bit of foam stuffing or cigarette burn or ink stain is the alternative! If you are applying a patch in the same kind of colour spectrum it is amazing how invisible they become unless you are looking for it.  Sometimes a patch with a design on it in a contrast colour may look even better.

If the patch arrives and you wish to change the colour, our windows on our packaging allow you to take a good look and still send it back to us with the packaging intact. And if you really need it to be an exact match, one of our colours may be perfect or you can paint some leather dye over the top to get it to your exact specifications.

What if I don’t like the colour?

You can only return your leather repair patch in the same state it was delivered, i.e. if you have removed the product from its packaging we can not accept any returns.
